Get help setting up and using History Maker.
Getting Started
Download the App
Download History Maker from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
Sign in with Google
Open the app and sign in with your Google account. This allows the app to save recordings to your Google Drive.
Grant Permissions
Allow access to your camera and microphone when prompted. These are required for recording. Location permission is optional.
Start Recording
Tap the big red button to start recording. Tap it again to stop. Your recording will automatically upload to Google Drive.
How to Use
Recording
- Start/Stop: Tap the red record button
- Pin a moment: Tap the pin button while recording to bookmark an important moment
- Duration: The timer at the top shows how long you've been recording
- Segments: Long recordings are automatically split into 60-second segments for reliable upload
Uploads
- Automatic: Recordings upload automatically when you have an internet connection
- Pending uploads: The number in the top-right shows how many files are waiting to upload
- Background upload: Uploads continue even when the app is in the background
- Sync Now: Go to Settings and tap "Sync Now" to manually trigger uploads
Settings
- Location Tagging: Toggle to enable/disable adding location to recordings
- Public Sharing: Enable to make your recordings folder accessible via link
- Storage Logs: View upload activity and any errors
Finding Your Recordings
- Open Google Drive
- Look for the "HistoryMaker" folder
- Inside, you'll find a "sessions" folder containing your recordings organized by date
Troubleshooting
Uploads Not Working
- Check your internet connection
- Make sure you're signed in (check Settings)
- Try tapping "Sync Now" in Settings
- Check the Storage Logs in Settings for error messages
Camera Not Showing
- Make sure you granted camera permission
- Go to your device Settings → History Maker → Camera and ensure it's enabled
- Try closing and reopening the app
Location Not Recording
- Check that Location Tagging is enabled in the app's Settings
- Make sure you granted location permission to the app
- The status indicator on the recording screen shows "Location on" or "Location off"
Signing Out and Starting Fresh
If you're experiencing persistent issues, you can reset the app:
- Go to Google Drive
- Find and delete the "HistoryMaker" folder
- Open the History Maker app
- Go to Settings
- Tap "Logout & Clear Data"
- Sign in again with your Google account
Sharing Issues
If you can't enable public sharing from the app:
- Open Google Drive
- Right-click the "HistoryMaker" folder
- Select "Share"
- Change "Restricted" to "Anyone with the link"
- Copy the share link
Google Drive Storage Full
- Check your Google Drive storage
- Delete old recordings you no longer need
- Consider upgrading to Google One for more storage
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are my recordings stored?
Recordings are stored in your personal Google Drive account, in a folder called "HistoryMaker". You have full control over this folder.
Can you see my recordings?
No. History Maker has no servers. Your recordings go directly from your phone to your Google Drive. We never see or have access to your content.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Any recordings that were uploaded to Google Drive are safe. You can access them by signing into Google Drive from any device.
How do I delete my data?
- Local data: Use "Logout & Clear Data" in the app's Settings, or uninstall the app
- Cloud data: Delete the HistoryMaker folder in Google Drive
- Revoke access: Go to Google Account permissions and remove History Maker
Does the app work without internet?
Yes. You can record without internet. Recordings are saved locally and will upload automatically when you're back online.
